What is preventing my vehicle from starting up?

Powerhouse Auto Repair • 22 December 2022

When you first notice that your engine isn’t firing up as easily as usual, you’ll want to be proactive about getting to the shop. This will give you the best chance to take care of the issue before it escalates to the point that your engine won’t start at all. At Powerhouse Auto Repair, our local mechanics provide expert engine diagnostics and repair in the greater Tallahassee area.

Common Reasons that Engines Won’t Start

No-start is often caused by problems with the battery/charging system. A variety of issues can cause car batteries to die, such as old age, parasitic draws, corroded/loose connections, and leaving your headlights on. Alternator trouble can also cause a battery to die. Warning signs of an alternator problem include issues with electrical accessories (i.e. power seats, power windows, radio), flickering/dimming headlights, and a dashboard warning light that flashes on with the letters ALT or GEN or in the shape of a little rectangular battery.

Issues with fuel supply also often prevent cars from starting. A clogged fuel filter can prevent the engine from taking in sufficient fuel to reliably fire up. By replacing your fuel filter about every 25,000 miles, you can avoid this issue. A failing fuel pump can also cause problems with starting up because gas won’t be able to properly travel from the tank toward the engine. Symptoms of fuel pump trouble include sputtering, surging, decreasing gas mileage, and a whining noise emerging from the gas tank. Gunked-up fuel injectors are another issue that can make it hard for the engine to fire up. Pouring a fuel additive into your tank can help with getting rid of contaminants from injectors and intake valves.

A faulty starter can also prevent your engine from coming roaring to life. An indication of a bad starter is that when you turn the key, your dash lights come on but your engine won’t start and you hear a clicking sound. A faulty starter can also cause a grinding noise.
